Bairds Bar opened in 1842 and is the only pub in Glasgow’s Gallowgate never to have changed its name. Bairds Bar is the most famous Celtic pub in the world.
Baird’s present licensee, Thomas Carberry, took over the pub in 1988 - Celtic’s centenary year - and transformed it from a run-of-the-mill pub into Glasgow’s first, and by far most famous, ‘Celtic pub’.
Tam has decorated the walls and ceiling with Celtic memorabilia, flags, and photographs from around the world and covering the club’s entire history. The collection includes many rare and valuable items and has featured in television programmes and been the subject of visits from nostalgic supporters and relatives of ex-players from all over the world.
As a ‘Barras Boy’ who was born and grew up 100 yards from the pub, and who is himself a former market-trader, Tam is proud of the fact that, every year, Baird’s St. Patrick’s day celebrations are widely recognised as the best in the city.
Bairds has, in the words of licensee Tam Carberry, turned the Gallowgate into ‘The Celtic Mile’. This is underlined by the fact that, on a single day, 4 Lisbon Lions - Bobby Murdoch, Jimmy Johnstone, Bertie Auld and Willie O’Neill - were working behind the bar!
Many of the surrounding pubs have now also become ‘Celtic pubs’, but Bairds Bar was the first, and it remains, indisputably, the best! Come on in, and find out for yourself!
